  • PURPOSE: Sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is a rare adnexal tumor.
  • Extra-ocular, facial SC is very uncommon and local metastases are an extreme rare finding.
  • CASE AND REVIEW: A tumor of the left ear of an 87-old male was primary excised together with multiple suspicious lesions of the head and neck.
  • Despite the in-sano resection, additional new suspicious retro-auricular and temporal lesions were detected.
  • Successive resections were diagnosed as basal cell carcinomas (BCC) and, because of a non-in-sano resection in a third approach, as SC.
  • In another review, in a total of 168 cases, SC was diagnosed after wrong initial histological diagnosis (SCC n = 56, BCC n = 44; other entity or precursors of carcinomas n = 68).
  • CONCLUSION: Due to inconsistent histologic patterns, histopathological misdiagnosis of the uncommon facial SC and its metastases may complicate further therapy, prolong treatment and may lead to a worse prognosis of this neoplasm.

  • [Title] Ear melanoma: influence of perichondrium involvement in evaluating surgical strategy.
  • Adequate treatment of melanomas of the external ear offers unique surgical challenges because of the complex anatomical features of the auricle and the need for proper oncologic aggressiveness, as well as for valid aesthetic results.
  • In accordance with histological reports, we could observe the absence of neoplastic cells in perichondral bone and in cartilagenous tissue, providing further assurance concerning the importance of preserving the outer ear in expectation of reconstruction.
  • Therefore, an excision preserving the cartilagenous tissue, thus allowing an efficient full-thickness cutaneous grafting may guarantee good functional and aesthetic results.

  • [Title] Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation protects endotoxemic rat from lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation.
  • Background. Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (ta-VNS) could evoke parasympathetic activities via activating the brainstem autonomic nuclei, similar to the effects that are produced after vagus nerve stimulation (VNS).
  • Results. Similar to the effect of VNS, ta-VNS suppressed the serum proinflammatory cytokines levels, such as tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) as well as NF-kappa B p65 expressions of lung tissues.

  • [Title] Interplay between VEGF-A and cMET signaling in human vestibular schwannomas and schwann cells.
  • Vestibular schwannoma (VS), the fourth most common intracranial tumor, arises from the Schwann cells of the vestibular nerve.
  • We have investigated the potential cross-talk between hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A) in human VS, an interaction that has been described in other physiological and pathological cell types.
  • We affirmed previous findings that VEGF-A signaling is aberrantly upregulated in VS, and established that expression of HGF and its receptor cMET is also significantly higher in sporadic VS than in healthy nerves.
  • In primary human VS and Schwann cell cultures, we found that VEGF-A and HGF signaling pathways modulate each other. siRNAs targeting cMET decreased both cMET and VEGF-A protein levels, and siRNAs targeting VEGF-A reduced cMET expression.

  • METHODS: Mouse ear edema was induced by TPA.
  • Tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) and interleukin (IL)-1β levels in cell supernatants were measured by TNFα and IL-1β ELISA kits.
  • RESULTS: Spermidine and spermine caused significant decreases in ear thickness, water content, and neutrophil infiltrations in comparison with negative control (p < 0.05).
  • CONCLUSION: Our findings clearly demonstrated that polyamines are involved in the anti-inflammatory effect by reducing dermal edema thickness and other inflammatory mediators like NO and cytokines in a dose-dependent manner.

  • Vestibular schwannomas (VSs), the most common tumors of the cerebellopontine angle, arise from Schwann cells lining the vestibular nerve.
  • Pharmacotherapies against VS are almost non-existent.
  • Although the therapeutic inhibition of inflammatory modulators has been established for other neoplasms, it has not been explored in vs. A bioinformatic network analysis of all genes reported to be differentially expressed in human VS revealed a pro-inflammatory transcription factor nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) as a central molecule in VS pathobiology.

  • Synchronic occurrence of benign and malignant tumors is extremely rare.
  • Fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma represents 1% to 2% of all hepatocarcinomas, while myxomas represent about half of all the cases of primary tumors of the heart.
  • We present the case of a 53-year-old woman with a left atrial myxoma that was surgically removed.

  • Stress affects the pathophysiology of cutaneous immune reactions, including contact hypersensitivity (CH) in individuals sensitized with sensitizing hapten, where local endothelial cell activation plays a critical role.
  • Namely, ear thickness and mast cell numbers were significantly increased in stressed CH mice. mRNA expression of preprotachykinin-A, a precursor of substance-P; interferon-gamma; interleukin (IL)-4; IL-6; and tumor necrosis factor-alpha significantly increased in stressed CH mice.
  • Furthermore, stressed L-selectin-deficient mice showed significant decreases in all parameters mentioned above relative to stressed wild-type mice in CH response.
  • Meanwhile, treatment with anti-L-selectin Ab resulted in a significant decrease in ear thickness and mRNA levels of interferon-gamma, IL-4, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, but failed to significantly reduce preprotachykinin-A mRNA levels and mast cell numbers.
  • Our results indicated that auditory stress enhances CH response and that the augmentation of this CH response might be mediated through L-selectin, but not through P- or E-selectin pathways.

  • A 73-year-old female patient complained of right-sided facial pain, progressive loss of hearing, giddiness when changing position, a pre-auricular swelling and lack of facial expression.
  • Histology showed this to be a well to moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma with centers of positive immune response to GCDFP-24 (gross cystic disease fluid protein).
  • The subsequent computed tomography of the thorax and mammography located the approximately 25 mm in size primary tumor in the left breast.

  • BACKGROUND: The consumption of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) is important to human health, especially in cases of cardiovascular disease.
  • Although beneficial effects of n-3 PUFAs have been observed in a number of studies, the mechanisms involved in these effects have yet to be discovered.
  • The fatty acid composition in ear tissue of pigs were detected with gas chromatography.
  • RESULTS: The hfat-1 transgenic pigs were developed which accumulate high levels of n-3 PUFAs than wild-types pigs.
  • Gas chromatography results demonstrated that the total n-3 PUFAs in the ear tissues of the transgenic founders were 2-fold higher than the wild-type pigs.
  • The basal levels of the inflammation mediators tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in transgenic pigs were inhibited markedly compared with the wild-type pigs.
  • CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that n-3 PUFAs accumulation in vivo may have beneficial effects on vascular and hfat-1 transgenic pigs may be a useful tool for investigating the involved mechanisms.
