  • METHODS: The medical records of 14 patients with primary lacrimal sac/nasolacrimal duct carcinoma treated at 1 institution were retrospectively reviewed.
  • RESULTS: The patients were 9 men and 5 women; the median age at diagnosis was 58.5 years (range, 45-73 years).
  • In 3 patients, the diagnosis of cancer was not considered until during or after dacryocystorhinostomy.
  • Seven patients had squamous cell carcinoma, 2 transitional cell carcinoma, 2 adenoid cystic carcinoma, and 1 each adenocarcinoma, poorly differentiated carcinoma, and inverted papilloma with carcinoma in situ transformation.
  • Radiotherapy was recommended for 13 patients; in 1 patient, radiotherapy was not recommended because the patient had an inverted papilloma with carcinoma in situ transformation that was completely excised.
  • CONCLUSIONS: With multidisciplinary therapy, the eye can be spared and reasonable visual function can be preserved in most patients with primary lacrimal sac/nasolacrimal duct carcinomas.

  • METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed records of 11 consecutive HIV patients who underwent OE for invasive orbital malignancy at our institution from January 2005 to December 2015.
  • Histopathological examination showed invasive orbital squamous cell carcinomas in nine patients (81.81%), achromic orbital melanoma in one patient (9.09%), and adenoid cystic carcinoma in one patient (9.09%).

  • METHODS: The retrospective case series study included all 298 patients of epithelial lacrimal gland tumors which had been collected in the ophthalmic pathologic laboratory of the Tongren Hospital Beijing in the study period from 1961 to 2005.
  • RESULTS: Pleomorphic adenomas were the most common tumors (n = 213 (72%)), followed by adenoid cystic carcinoma (n = 58 (20%)), pleomorphic adenocarcinoma (n = 13 (4%)), primary adenocarcinoma (n = 8 (3%)) and other tumors (n = 6 (2%)).
  • The most frequent symptoms and clinical signs were restrictions of the lid or eye motility (121 patients; 41%), any other kind of lid involvement (71 patients; 24%), swelling (57 patients; 19%), pain (57 patients; 8%), and decrease in vision (15 patients; 5%).
  • A restriction of the eye motility was noted for 61 patients (21%), due to an involvement of the extraocular muscles with the tumor and due to a tumor-induced displacement of the globe.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Based on the archives of the Beijing Tongren ophthalmo-pathological laboratory, the most common epithelial tumors of the lacrimal gland in mainland China were pleomorphic adenomas, followed by adenoid cystic carcinoma.

  • Primary sinonasal tract and nasopharyngeal adenoid cystic carcinomas (STACC) are uncommon tumors that are frequently misclassified, resulting in inappropriate clinical management.
  • STACC needs to be considered in the differential diagnosis of most sinonasal malignancies, particularly poorly differentiated carcinoma, olfactory neuroblastoma and pleomorphic adenoma.

  • [Title] Survival in oral cavity minor salivary gland carcinoma.
  • SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Cases of minor salivary gland cancer of the oral cavity were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database (1988-2005) and staged.
  • RESULTS: A total of 639 salivary gland cancers of the oral cavity (55% female; mean age, 56 years) were identified with complete staging information, consisting of 318 mucoepidermoid, 169 adenoid cystic, 139 adenocarcinoma, and 14 acinic cell cancers.
  • Overall mean survival (months) was 157.9 and was similar across histologic subtypes: mucoepidermoid (172.4), adenoid cystic (141.4), acinic cell (138.7), and adenocarcinoma (147.2).
  • Survival for low- and intermediate-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma (171.0 and 182.3, respectively) was better than survival for high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma (50.3, P < 0.001).
  • CONCLUSION: T stage and N stage are the most powerful predictors of survival in minor salivary gland carcinoma of the oral cavity.
  • With the exception of high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma, survival for these lesions is generally favorable.
