  • We studied postexercise amino acid metabolism, in the whole body and across the forearm.
  • Seven volunteers were infused with L-[alpha-15N]lysine and L-[1-13C]-leucine twice [one time during 3 h after cycle exercise (75% VO2max), and one time in the resting state].
  • Whole body protein breakdown was estimated from dilution of L-[alpha-15N]lysine and L-[1-13C]ketoisocaproic acid (KIC) enrichments in plasma.
  • Leucine oxidation was calculated from 13CO2 enrichments in expired air.
  • Whole body protein breakdown was not increased above resting levels during the recovery period.
  • Leucine oxidation was decreased after exercise (postexercise 13 +/- 2.3 vs. resting 19 +/- 3.2 mumol.kg-1.h-1; P less than 0.02), while nonoxidative leucine disposal was increased (115 +/- 6.1 vs. 103 +/- 5.6 micrograms.kg-1.min-1; P less than 0.02).
  • After exercise, forearm net lysine balance was unchanged (87 +/- 25 vs. 93 +/- 28 nmol.100 ml-1.min-1), but there were decreases in forearm muscle protein degradation (219 +/- 51 vs. 356 +/- 85 nmol.100 ml-1.min-1; P less than 0.05) and synthesis (132 +/- 41 vs. 255 +/- 69 nmol.100 ml-1.min-1; P less than 0.01).
  • In conclusion, after exercise 1) whole body protein degradation is not increased, 2) leucine disposal is directed away from oxidative and toward nonoxidative pathways, 3) forearm protein synthesis is decreased.
  • Postexercise increases in whole body protein synthesis occur in tissues other than nonexercised muscle.

  • [Title] Cue-recruitment for extrinsic signals after training with low information stimuli.
  • Cue-recruitment occurs when a previously ineffective signal comes to affect the perceptual appearance of a target object, in a manner similar to the trusted cues with which the signal was put into correlation during training.
  • Jain, Fuller and Backus reported that extrinsic signals, those not carried by the target object itself, were not recruited even after extensive training.
  • However, recent studies have shown that training using weakened trusted cues can facilitate recruitment of intrinsic signals.
  • The current study was designed to examine whether extrinsic signals can be recruited by putting them in correlation with weakened trusted cues.
  • Specifically, we tested whether an extrinsic visual signal, the rotary motion direction of an annulus of random dots, and an extrinsic auditory signal, direction of an auditory pitch glide, can be recruited as cues for the rotation direction of a Necker cube.
  • We found learning, albeit weak, for visual but not for auditory signals.
  • These results extend the generality of the cue-recruitment phenomenon to an extrinsic signal and provide further evidence that the visual system learns to use new signals most quickly when other, long-trusted cues are unavailable or unreliable.

  • Selective attention enhances visual information processing, as measured by behavioral performance and neural activity.
  • However, little is known about its effects on subjective experience.
  • Here, we investigated the effect of transient (exogenous) attention on the appearance of visual motion, using a psychophysical procedure that directly measures appearance and controls for response bias.
  • Observers viewed pairs of moving dot patterns and reported the motion direction of the more coherent pattern.
  • Directing attention (via a peripheral precue) to a stimulus location increased its perceived coherence level and improved performance on a direction discrimination task.
  • In a control experiment, we ruled out response bias by lengthening the time interval between the cue and the stimuli, so that the effect of transient attention could no longer be exerted.
  • Our results are consistent with those of neurophysiological studies showing that attention modulates motion processing and provide evidence of a subjective perceptual correlate of attention, with a concomitant effect on performance.

  • OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of vasomotor symptoms (VMS) among women aged 45 years or older who report regular menses has not been described well.
  • Variability by race/ethnicity is expected.
  • METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of Group Health enrollees was performed among women ages 45-56 y with regular and no skipped menses, and not taking hormones.
  • Data were collected from electronic databases and mailed surveys, including a soy food questionnaire.
  • Associations between race/ethnicity and VMS (ever/never; past 2 wk) were assessed using generalized linear models, controlling for age and body mass index.
  • The prevalence of headache and joint pain, and VMS associations within race by soy intake were explored.
  • RESULTS: A total of 1,513 premenopausal women with a mean age of 48.5 years responded to the survey; 75% were white.
  • Native American women were most likely to report ever having VMS (66.7%), followed by black (61.4%), white (58.3%), Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (45.5%), mixed-ethnicity (42.1%), Vietnamese (40.0%), Filipino (38.9%, P < 0.05), Japanese (35.9%, P < 0.01), East Indian (31.3%, P < 0.05), Chinese (29.0%, P < 0.001), and other Asian (25.6%, P < 0.001) women, as compared with white women.
  • Hispanic women were less likely to have VMS (41.7%) than non-Hispanic white women (58.8%, P < 0.001).
  • Among white women, but not among other women, soy intake was associated with VMS (P = 0.03).
  • CONCLUSIONS: Among a diverse population of premenopausal women, VMS prevalence is high at 55%.
  • Asian (vs white) and Hispanic (vs non-Hispanic white) women are less likely to report ever having VMS, a pattern similar to that observed during the menopausal transition and early postmenopause in our studies.

  • [Title] Analyzing the heterogeneity and complexity of Electronic Health Record oriented phenotyping algorithms.
  • The need for formal representations of eligibility criteria for clinical trials - and for phenotyping more generally - has been recognized for some time.
  • Indeed, the availability of a formal computable representation that adequately reflects the types of data and logic evidenced in trial designs is a prerequisite for the automatic identification of study-eligible patients from Electronic Health Records.
  • As part of the wider process of representation development, this paper reports on an analysis of fourteen Electronic Health Record oriented phenotyping algorithms (developed as part of the eMERGE project) in terms of their constituent data elements, types of logic used and temporal characteristics.
  • We discovered that the majority of eMERGE algorithms analyzed include complex, nested boolean logic and negation, with several dependent on cardinality constraints and complex temporal logic.
  • Insights gained from the study will be used to augment the CDISC Protocol Representation Model.

  • To investigate the effects of exogenous attention, previous studies have generally used highly salient cues that reliably trigger attention.
  • However, the cueing threshold of exogenous attention has been unexamined.

  • Cue contrast modulated the attentional effect, even at cue contrasts above the level at which observers can perfectly localize the cue; hence, the result is not due to an increase in cue visibility.
  • No attentional effect is observed when the 100% contrast cue is presented after the stimuli, ruling out cue bias or sensory interaction between cues and stimuli as alternative explanations.
  • A second experiment, using the same paradigm with high contrast motion stimuli gave similar results, providing further evidence against a sensory interaction explanation, as the stimuli and task were defined on a visual dimension independent from cue contrast.
  • Although exogenous attention is triggered automatically and involuntarily, the attentional effect is gradual.

  • Because temporary jobs are time-delimited, their implications for workers' economic security depend not only on their current characteristics, but also their place in longer-term patterns of mobility.
  • Past research has typically asked whether temporary jobs are a bridge to better employment or trap workers in ongoing insecurity, investigating this question by analyzing single transitions.
  • We demonstrate that this approach is ill-suited to assessing the often more complex and turbulent employment patterns characteristic of temporary workers.
  • Our analysis instead employs sequence methods to compare a representative sample of temporary workers' month-by-month mobility patterns through 8 potential (non)employment states over five years.
  • We derive a typology of trajectories and describe their relative precariousness in relation to employment stability and wage and earnings levels and growth.
  • While some of the pathways correspond quite closely to frameworks used by past research, others reveal new and important distinctions.
  • Multinomial logit models reveal job, employer, and worker characteristics associated with different pathways.
  • Age, gender, and type of temporary work stand out as important factors shaping subsequent mobility patterns.
